How Often Should You Play Poker?

0 Comments 23 March 2010

There are clear arguments either way for people who say that playing a lot online is better than playing just a few hours a week. I always feel that the differing situations for various people often means that what may be correct for someone else may not be correct for others. For instance I stopped playing high-stakes poker several years ago when my writing and promotional work started to get more and more intense. At the end of the day poker is a skill in the same way as driving and other skill related activities.

What this means is that poker when not played regularly is something that you can very often lose your touch with. I believe that it is in any poker players best interests to play online poker at least several hours every week. The online poker environment is forever changing and the poker sites themselves go a long way towards doing that.

When you factor in all of the individual things that contribute towards the poker environment changing then it is no surprise to see that the types of poker games that we are playing in now may be totally different in just a few months time. Things like sign-up bonuses, rakeback levels, types of coaching that are available, software and all the rest of it all contributes to making our poker environment a different one every time that we play.

These differences are not apparent on a day-to-day basis but they are taking place all the same. It is for this reason that I share such poker tips and I recommend to any novice and intermediate player who is trying to master the game in as short a time frame as possible to play as much as they possibly can and as often as they can without interruption. This I feel is critical to the ongoing education of an online poker player.

It seems important to play poker constantly anyway even if you are playing live as it is all too easy to lose touch with the techniques and strategies that you will come to take for granted on a day-to-day basis. Those changes are taking place at a tremendous speed in online poker. Let’s just say that you were a successful online poker player who was earning between $20,000 and $50,000 per year.

Then for whatever reason you decided to take a break from the game and didn’t play for a good six months. I personally guarantee that the game that you would have left would not be the same as the game that you were about to play when you returned. Of course each individual person has their own lifestyle and personal commitments that prevent you from playing at certain times.

While I am not saying that you should play poker full time or every single hour of every day. I definitely recommend that any serious or semi-serious poker player plays as often as they possibly can.

It is imperative that you do this as your poker education will not be sufficiently rounded enough if your poker knowledge is only ever accumulated from areas like poker books and poker coaching sites. While these learning avenues are crucial for the advancement of a poker player, they must be dovetailed with actual playing experience.

I have known several people personally who spent far too long studying theory that wasn’t even relevant to the games that they were either playing in or looking to play. Some people may argue that reading books and acquiring knowledge is a positive step to take, this would be true with certain subjects but not with poker. Quite often knowledge that you have acquired from various sources can have a strong negative impact on how you are playing the game and your overall mindset.

Playing poker on the other hand will allow you to pick up that all important “feel” that you will often read about in poker literature.
