Beyond the Bad Beat

No Comments 15 April 2010

In this article I am going to discuss the concept of looking beyond the bad beat. When you lose a big poker hand, the circumstances by which you lose the hand will dictate how bad you feel about the outcome. Being at the final table of a large poker tournament you might have the opportunity for a life changing win, so having to return to your day job, albeit a little richer but not nearly as close to your goal as you might have been, it seems a cruel way to end the poker tournament. When luck and not skill causes you to lose, it feels even worse.

The Fear of Losing

No Comments 23 March 2010

At the end of the day whether you are playing poker online or in some live casino, psychology will come into play at some stage. With regards to online poker many people will argue that psychology plays a very minimal part in the game simply because you cannot see or hear your opponents. There is some truth to this although I feel that it is extremely misleading because psychology plays a huge part in online poker and do not let anyone else tell you otherwise.

How Often Should You Play Poker?

No Comments 23 March 2010

There are clear arguments either way for people who say that playing a lot online is better than playing just a few hours a week. I always feel that the differing situations for various people often means that what may be correct for someone else may not be correct for others. For instance I stopped playing high-stakes poker several years ago when my writing and promotional work started to get more and more intense. At the end of the day poker is a skill in the same way as driving and other skill related activities.

Avoiding Tilt in Online Poker

It is a little understood fact that tilt is more common in online poker than it is in live play. There are numerous reasons for this and the first one has to do with human psychology. What is a Bad Beat?

No Comments 23 March 2010

To win playing poker you build a pot that you win having the strongest hand at the showdown. Whilst your opponent remains in the hand they too are building a pot hoping that they either have a strong hand already or draw to hit the necessary cards to improve to the winning hand. Once the hands are revealed, you may have done everything right during the hand in terms of bet sizing, raising or checking yet the one or two cards that your opponent was drawing for to win came out, thus costing you the pot. This is referred to as a “bad beat” meaning that luck rather than skill contributed to the winning hand this time. It can be very frustrating; no-one likes losing to a lucky player.

Dealing with Bad Beats

No Comments 23 March 2010

A bad beat causes negative emotion as soon as that bad card hits the felt causing you to lose the pot. The first thing you feel is irritation and anger that you have lost the pot you feel you deserved to win. The second may be anger at your opponent daring to celebrate even though they are just plain lucky. You then imagine your chip stack and the chips you have just lost. If you are still in the tournament you must bounce back from the bad beat or your game will be negatively affected from this point forward and you may bust out. In cash games the next hand could be costly if you are on tilt.
