Bad Beat Stories

Crazy Bad Beats in Poker

Previously I have admitted having a guilty pleasure in listening to other people’s bad beat stories. It gives me both a laugh at the antics of some players and it also reminds me that when I suffer that painful experience it is not just me that poker beats with the bad beat stick. Someone on an Internet Forum asked the question about the funniest things people had seen after a bad beat and I thought you would enjoy hearing them. I do not know that every single one is true, but I expect they are. Bad beats cause the already crazy poker players to go even crazier.

One player talks about seeing a player throw a chair across the room and then break up with his girlfriend before storming out of the poker room. He was apparently given a ban and asked to apologise to all of the players before a lifetime ban was reduced to a time limited ban. The most apologising he had to do was to his girlfriend, who apparently forgave his public dumping and they reconciled that same evening.

Another forum poster describes seeing a player spit on the table before destroying his chair, making a rude sign at the players left in the tournament before being thrown out of the casino. I am very glad I was not at that table!

This story is not necessarily a bad beat story but in a way it is. What should be a lucky moment turns out to be a bad beat in terms of getting himself mocked by the other players. An old man went all-in with KK and was called by two people. The showdown revealed a smaller pair and Ax. The flop came down A x x and the gentleman promptly picked his cards up and ripped them up into little pieces. The turn was, of course, a King giving him Trip Kings which holds up on the river. He calls the floor over and eventually the floor manager lets him have the pot, but charges him a fee for the deck which he destroyed.

Another interesting story was one that I was present for. I was playing in my local casino in a moderate buy-in tournament when a player on a different table was eliminated when his pocket Queens were outdrawn by a hand which I believe was 7 8 suited. Two players had been eliminated in the hand and the second player who was out told him to stop being such a baby and take it like a man. The tilting player promptly challenged the other player to a fight in the parking lot. Everyone told the guy just to leave but he was adamant he wanted a fight; I believe he had been drinking. The second player stood up and was probably a good 50 pounds heavier and a head taller than the louder irate player. Undeterred the player decided to go into the parking lot and take his chances. Later on in the tournament we noticed them at the bar together and I said to another regular “So who won the fight then?” My fellow player replied “They did not fight. When they got outside they noticed someone breaking into the big guy’s car and chased him away before he did any damage. He is buying him a beer as a thank you”.

Although we can raise a laugh at these funny stories, the best way to act is to graciously accept the beat just like a professional player. By professional, I mean dignified and courteous rather than a Phil Hellmuth style response. Bad beats are part of the game and the more times you get your money in with the best of it the more you will seem to suffer bad beats. But do not worry, as long as the percentages favour you more often than not you should be a winning player. You may encounter entertaining stories like these along the way aswell.
