When you bust out from a cash game or poker tournament thanks to a bad beat the first feeling is one of disappointment, then anger and then back to disappointment at the injustice of it. You then need the reassurance that you are still a great player and that it was not your fault that you busted out so you seek out a willing pair of ears to whom you passionately tell your tale of woe. Since getting good cards and getting them cracked by one or two-outers is just something that happens in poker, we get some use for these bad beats by talking and writing about them. Poker player’s love reading or hearing about bad beat stories, even if it is just to remind them that some other poor soul is suffering just like they do. Luck is a part of the game we love because it sometimes helps us and we hate because it sometimes hurts us. Dispelling Bad Beat Myths

I am doing my own personal challenge where I am turning $0.00 into hopefully a lot more. After placing in a couple of freeroll I entered into a special freeroll tournament with a first prize of $55.00. After a good run of nice hands at the right time and some good folds I found myself in the final five after outlasting a field of over 1,400 players. I was guaranteed $15 for my current placing, which was a great start for my challenge. I was dealt KJ with five remaining and faced an all-in bet from a player who was literally jamming every hand. I called and he revealed QJ. I was really happy with this and dreamed of the big $55 win (my opponent and I were the top stacks so I would have a massive chip lead if my KJ help up).

Previously I have admitted having a guilty pleasure in listening to other people’s bad beat stories. It gives me both a laugh at the antics of some players and it also reminds me that when I suffer that painful experience it is not just me that poker beats with the bad beat stick. Someone on an Internet Forum asked the question about the funniest things people had seen after a bad beat and I thought you would enjoy hearing them. I do not know that every single one is true, but I expect they are. Bad beats cause the already crazy poker players to go even crazier.

1998 World Series Main Event – A Bad Beat for Both Players

The 1998 World Series of Poker is best remembered for the final hand between Scotty Nguyen and Kevin McBride. This main event was also the first since the poker legend Stu Ungar won $1 million in 1997. Ungar had been scheduled to participate in the event after winning the year before but did not come to the start of the event being unfit to play. Ungar would pass away in November 1998. Although the event got off to a bad start it will forever live in the memory thanks to the final hand.
